Non-musical history for today: 1996 – After the aircraft departed from Miami, a fire started by improperly handled chemical oxygen generators in the cargo hold of Atlanta-bound ValuJet Airlines Flight 592 caused the Douglas DC-9 to crash in the Florida Everglades, killing all 110 on board. Not that any person was more important than the other passengers, there were three notable names on the manifest. Those were San Diego Chargers running back Rodney Culver, songwriter and musician Walter Hyatt, and DelMarie Walker, 38, the prime suspect in a murder in Georgia. Most of the remains were identified, but because the plane crashed into a swamp, chances are that scavenging wildlife probably got to the bodies that weren’t totally destroyed in the devastation.
Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 11.
Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
