Non-musical history for today: Happy Mexican Independence Day! Well, at least on September 16, when it actually happens. Contrary to popular ignorance, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated to commemorate Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. So, still have your tacos, burritos, Coronas, Modelos, and margaritas. Just know what you’re celebrating and why. “¡Viva México!” (that, by the way, is the “Cry (Grito de) of Delores” ).
Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 5.
Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
