Non-musical history for today: 1789 – A national Thanksgiving Day was observed in the United States as proclaimed by President George Washington at the request of Congress. The Thanksgiving fun doesn't stop there!
1863 – United States President Abraham Lincoln proclaims November 26 as a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated annually on the final Thursday of November. Following the "Franksgiving" controversy from 1939 to 1941, it was observed on the fourth Thursday in 1942 and subsequent years, as we now know it.
Franksgiving was FDR's move of the holiday up a week to try to help the recovery and morale during the end of the Great Depression. At the time, it was considered bad form for retailers to display Christmas decorations or have Christmas sales before the celebration of Thanksgiving, a phenomenon later referred to as "Christmas creep." That is obviously no longer the case. Franksgiving ended up just being a lot of chaos and protests.
Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for November 26.
Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
