Non-musical history for today: 1586 – A number of conspirators in the Babington Plot were hanged, drawn and quartered. The Babington Plot was the conspiracy to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I and her cousin Mary, Queen of the Scots. Mary was eventually executed because a letter surfaced where she consented to the assassination of Elizabeth. During the trial, she was not permitted legal counsel nor to review the evidence against her nor to call witnesses. Portions of the letter translations were read at the trial. Mary was convicted of treason against England and after Elizabeth signed the death warrant of her cousin, Mary was executed in early 1587.
