Listen Later

Non-musical history for today: 1378 – Cardinal Robert of Geneva is elected as Pope Clement VII, beginning the “Papal schism.” This is also known as The Western Schism, the Great Occidental Schism, the Schism of 1378, or the Great Schism. I love the word “schism.” Not necessarily its usage, but the word itself. So, with this schism, several individuals were claiming to be the true and rightful Pope at the same time. Rome and Avignon to begin with. Then, Pisa, yes, the leaning tower town, started throwing one out. That went on until November of 1417. As you can imagine, it created a lot of confusion.

Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for September 20.

Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
