We outline a book project titled "Before Nicaea,"which challenges the modern perception that the early church was a flexible, liberal, and non-dogmatic movement. The author argues that contemporary readers have projected post-Enlightenment assumptions onto history, incorrectly imagining a "gentle" origins phase that preceded later theological rigidity. Instead, the sources present the pre-Nicene church as a supernaturally charged and morally severe community that took divine judgment, demonic conflict, and scriptural authority with absolute seriousness. Through detailed chapter summaries, the text explores how early believers viewed martyrdom as a victory and saw the kingdom of Yahweh as a present, invading power rather than a mere ethical ideal. Ultimately, the work asserts that the early church was a deeply committed and apocalyptic civilization whose intense convictions existed long before the technical precision of later creeds. This retrieval project aims to dismantle the "liberal fantasy" of a symbolic Christ, replacing it with the historical reality of an uncompromising, miracle-expectant faith.
