Until you have a reasonable understanding of your audience, and the specific occasion, it would be foolish to start writing.

Classical rhetoric called this first stage "Invention", which sounds a bit dull. My publisher asked me to come up with something else. 

So I call it WOW, which stands for "Work Out What (The Heck You Are Up To)".

Drawing a mind map like this is something you should do before every talk - initially, anyway, because every audience and occasion is slightly different from the last.
