This is the second book I have read by this author and I would recommend both. In both books the theme is a little off-beat, but entirely easy to follow and get involved with both books. In this book a 16 year old girl is looking to quit school and leave home. She is also known around town as a gambler. The characters are very interesting and warm, and I found myself routing for them all.
Fantastic writing.
This author is amazing. I read the four books connected to this series. The stories move forward, are very poignant, and humorous, I enjoyed every minute of them. I downloaded another book of hers and I am enjoying it equally.
Fun, light read.
Well written with lots of interesting facts. Interesting because the characters are so unique.
"A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" for the new millennium
This charming novel is sort of a throwback to the 1950s, even though it takes place in the present. Which just goes to show once again how everything changes and everything stays the same -- at least when it comes to important things like love, death, the necessity of friendship, and the difficulty of finding where we belong in the world. I'd recommend this book to any young person who ever felt as if they didn't fit in and to any older person who enjoys an old-fashioned good read that's witty, poignant, and filled with original characters and great dialogue. I had not heard of this author ever before but from the picture she appears young enough to serve up a few more stories and I look forward to that. And if you ever wondered what might have happened if Anne from Green Gables had become a gambler this novel may just hold the answer.
A Great Surprise!
I've been a member of a book club for over 15 years and I have never had such pleasant surprise of a book in all that time. Another member suggested the book and frankly, I was somewhat reluctant to partake because I had seen the Amazon review from a Reader in Austin, Tx's and the comments about Why bother? That reviewer says nothing happens, etc. And she's right. If you're waiting for the big car chase or the big explosion, it's not going to happen. But if you want to be sucked into the lives terrific, loveable, quicky characters, this is a must read!! I had a hard time putting it down and I hope Ms. Pedersen writes a sequel because I'm dying to know what happens in the next stage of all these characters' lives.
