  • Behavior Is Evidence | Stop Judging Yourself and Start Investigating

What if the behaviors you've spent years criticizing yourself for were actually clues worth investigating?

In this episode of Behavior Leaves Clues, Monica Azoulay explores a powerful idea: our behavior is evidence worth investigating, not a verdict about who we are.

Growing up, Monica's father taught her to pay attention to people's actions, not just their words, because what we see on the outside doesn't always tell the whole story.

Years later, she realized that the same lesson applied to her own life.

From the outside, she appeared independent, responsible, and capable of handling just about anything. But behind the scenes, she was carrying responsibilities, navigating difficult circumstances, and rarely asking anyone for help.

A conversation with her cousin revealed just how deeply those patterns had become part of her identity.

And when unexpected news about her job triggered an overwhelming urge to deep-clean her house, Monica found herself investigating another familiar response: the desire for control when life feels uncertain.

Through personal stories, humor, and honest reflection, Monica explores why understanding the circumstances surrounding our behavior matters more than immediately assigning labels to ourselves.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • Why behavior is evidence, not a conclusion

    • The difference between observing someone's actions and assuming we understand their motivations

    • How independence and responsibility can become expectations we place on ourselves

    • Why being capable of handling something doesn't mean we're responsible for handling everything

    • How uncertainty can influence our everyday responses

    • Why even our most admired strengths are worth examining

    • How curiosity can help us recognize patterns and make more intentional choices

This week's invitation is simple: Notice one behavior that keeps showing up in your life.

What happened right before it? What might that behavior have helped you accomplish? Could there be another explanation you haven't considered?

You don't have to solve everything or change who you are.

You can simply begin paying attention.

Because the behavior is the clue, not the conclusion.

Behavior leaves clues. Let's follow the evidence.

  • When Uncertainty Makes You Reach for Control | Behavior Leaves Clues Ep 4

Have you ever received unexpected news and suddenly felt the need to clean, organize, make a list, or find something productive to do?

In this episode of Behavior Leaves Clues, Monica Azoulay shares what happened when she learned her department at work would be closing. With no guarantees about what would happen next, her immediate response was surprisingly ordinary: she wanted to clean her house.

But this time, she caught herself before acting on the impulse.

Why did cleaning suddenly feel so urgent? Was it simply something that needed to be done, or was she reaching for something she could control while another part of her life felt uncertain?

Through this personal experience, Monica explores how everyday behaviors can reveal patterns we might otherwise overlook. Sometimes the things we consider productive, responsible, or helpful may also be providing a sense of certainty when life feels unpredictable.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • Why uncertainty can make familiar activities feel suddenly urgent

    • The connection between productivity, preparation, and control

    • How to recognize a behavioral pattern without judging yourself

    • Why a useful behavior can serve more than one purpose

    • The difference between what an activity accomplishes and what we're hoping it will provide

    • How small moments of awareness can help us better understand ourselves

    • You don't have to analyze every decision or assume every habit has a hidden meaning. Sometimes cleaning is just cleaning.

But when you notice a familiar response showing up at an unexpected moment, it might be worth asking what happened right before it.

Because behavior leaves clues. And sometimes the most revealing ones are hiding in our ordinary routines.

    • When Preparation Becomes Control | Behavior Leaves Clues Ep 3

What happens when you've prepared for everything, but suddenly realize you can't control how things will unfold?

In this episode of Behavior Leaves Clues, Monica Azoulay shares a vulnerable moment backstage before opening an event. She had practiced her talk, prepared every detail, and was ready to step onto the stage. But just minutes before her introduction, she realized she couldn't deliver the polished version she'd rehearsed.

With the support and prayer of a friend, Monica made a different choice: she would put down the script and speak from her heart.

That experience revealed something deeper about her relationship with preparation, perfectionism, and control. Sometimes being prepared is about doing our best. Other times, it can also be about trying to manage how others see us.

Through personal storytelling and thoughtful reflection, Monica explores the difference between being prepared and needing everything to be perfect, why vulnerability can feel uncomfortable even when we're confident in our abilities, and what becomes possible when we allow ourselves to be seen without controlling every detail.

This episode invites you to get curious about the moments when you work hardest to appear as though you have everything handled.

Because sometimes the behavior worth investigating isn't what we do when things go wrong. It's how hard we work to make sure nobody sees us figuring things out.

    • Welcome to Behavior Leaves Clues

      Welcome to Behavior Leaves Clues

What happens when someone who loves having a plan says yes to something completely unexpected?

For me, it meant getting into a hot air balloon despite being terrified of heights!

In this episode, I'm sharing a little more about who I am and what a spontaneous adventure taught me about control, curiosity, and making room for experiences I can't plan in advance.

We'll talk about the difference between being prepared and needing certainty, why we sometimes feel we have to earn rest or enjoyment, and how the familiar roles we've assigned ourselves can keep us from discovering something new.

Because behavior doesn't just leave clues about where we've been. It can also show us what's becoming possible.

      • Learning to say yes without knowing the ending

      • The difference between preparation and control

      • Making room for joy, connection, and rest

      • Questioning the identities we've grown comfortable with

      • The difference between being visible and being known

      • Recognizing behavior as evidence of growth

      • Where in your life might you be waiting to know the ending before you're willing to begin?

Next week, we're going backstage to a moment when my carefully prepared plan fell apart and I had to confront how much I wanted to control the way others saw me.

I'm Monica Azoulay, a keynote speaker, bestselling author, podcast host, and Behavior & Identity Investigator.

Through my speaking, writing, and podcasts, I explore the patterns, beliefs, and experiences that shape who we become—and how we can consciously choose what comes next.

      • Episode 1 — Introducing Behavior Leaves Clues

What if the behavior you’ve been judging isn’t the problem—but a clue?

Welcome to the very first episode of Behavior Leaves Clues.

In this opening conversation, Monica Azoulay shares why she created the show, what the name Behavior Leaves Clues means, and why understanding behavior requires more than simply looking at what someone does.

Monica explores some of the patterns she has begun looking at differently in her own life—including control, perfectionism, self-reliance, preparation, and independence—and the question that has changed the way she approaches them:

What is this behavior trying to protect or provide?

In this episode, you’ll hear about:

        • Why a behavior is a clue, not a conclusion
        • The difference between choosing a behavior and feeling like you have to do it
        • Why the same behavior can mean different things for different people
        • Looking beneath the labels we’ve carried about ourselves
        • What to expect from future episodes of Behavior Leaves Clues
        • What this transition means for longtime Unshakeable Belief listeners
        • This isn’t about finding something wrong with you.

It’s about getting curious enough to understand more of the story.

        • Is It Avoidance or Discernment? When “No” Is Actually the Right Answer Ep 16

How do you know whether the fear you’re feeling is something to move through—or information telling you something genuinely isn’t right for you?

That distinction can be difficult, because fear can show up in both situations.

In this episode of Unshakeable Belief, Monica investigates the difference between avoidance and discernment—and why simply paying attention to how uncomfortable something feels may not give you the answer.

Sometimes fear appears because something we deeply want requires us to be seen, take a risk, or step into uncertainty. Other times, the discomfort is telling us that we’re trying to force ourselves to keep wanting something that no longer fits.

Monica explores this through her own experience of being someone who became very good at pushing through difficult things. For a capable person, it can become easy to assume that every challenge is simply something else to overcome. But eventually, Monica began asking a different question: just because I can carry something, does that mean I’m supposed to?

          That question changes the investigation.

Because saying yes isn’t automatically courage, and saying no isn’t automatically fear. Sometimes moving forward while you’re afraid is exactly what growth requires. Other times, growth means acknowledging that something no longer belongs in your life.

As Monica explains in this conversation, “Courage and self-abandonment are not the same thing.”

You’ll also hear why changing your mind doesn’t necessarily mean you failed, how your history can influence the meaning you assign to discomfort, and why self-trust doesn’t require knowing with certainty that you’re making the “right” decision.

Instead, self-trust can look like making the best decision you can with the information you have today—and trusting yourself to keep paying attention when new information arrives.

So if you’re wrestling with a decision, the question may not simply be:

          “Am I afraid?”

The more useful investigation may be:

If I move past the fear, is the desire still there?

Because behavior leaves clues in both directions.

If you’re beginning to recognize behaviors and patterns that have shaped the way you move through your life, Return to Herself is where we take that understanding deeper.

Beginning October 5, this live four-week coaching experience is designed to help you move beyond simply recognizing your survival strategies and begin reconnecting with the woman you’ve always been beneath the pressure, perfectionism, and expectations.

        • Why We Avoid the Things We Actually Want Ep 15

What happens when the thing you keep avoiding isn’t something you don’t want—but something you want deeply?

That question can be confusing because we tend to assume that if we really want something, our behavior should naturally move us toward it. But sometimes the closer a dream gets to becoming real, the more vulnerable it can feel.

In this episode of Unshakeable Belief, Monica explores why desire and avoidance can exist at the same time.

Using her own experience with speaking and visibility, Monica looks at the difference between wanting an opportunity and actually allowing yourself to be seen inside it. Sometimes the fear isn’t really about the stage, the project, the conversation, or the next step. Sometimes it’s about what becomes possible once other people can respond to us.

And that is where avoidance can make a lot more sense.

Because possibility feels different from reality. As long as something remains an idea, we still have a lot of control over the story. Once we act, we begin receiving real information. Someone may say yes. Someone may say no. We may be misunderstood. We may succeed. We may discover that the experience asks more of us than we expected.

That does not automatically mean we are moving in the wrong direction.

Sometimes discomfort is simply showing us where something important feels vulnerable.

In this episode, Monica also explores how old ideas about who we are can influence the choices we make now, why avoiding an experience can keep old beliefs intact, and how taking action can give us new evidence about what we are capable of handling today.

          The question isn’t simply:

“Why am I getting in my own way?”

A more useful question may be:

“What becomes vulnerable when the thing I want starts becoming real?”

          Because behavior leaves clues.

And when we understand what the behavior is trying to do for us, we have more information with which to choose what happens next.

If you’re beginning to recognize behaviors, beliefs, or patterns that no longer fit the woman you’re becoming, Return to Herself was created for this work.

Return to Herself is a live, four-week coaching experience designed to help you understand the patterns that have shaped you, reconnect with yourself beneath the pressure and expectations, and begin choosing what comes next more intentionally.

        • Ep 14: Productive Avoidance: When Working Hard Keeps You From Moving Forward

What if avoidance doesn’t look like doing nothing?

What if it looks like working incredibly hard?

In this episode of Unshakeable Belief, Monica Azoulay continues the September investigation into avoidance by examining one of its hardest forms to recognize: productive avoidance.

For high-capacity people, avoidance may not look like missed deadlines, ignored responsibilities, or a lack of motivation. It can look like researching, planning, organizing, revising, learning, solving problems, taking care of everyone else, and getting an extraordinary amount done.

The question isn’t whether those behaviors are good or bad.

The question is what they’re doing.

Sometimes preparation genuinely improves the work. But sometimes preparation becomes protection—because as long as we’re researching, refining, planning, or perfecting, we don’t have to cross the line into vulnerability.

We don’t have to send it.

          Publish it.

          Make the decision.

          Have the conversation.

          Ask for help.

          Let ourselves be evaluated.

Or find out what happens when the thing we say we want becomes real.

Monica also explores another form of productive avoidance: using busyness to avoid ourselves. When being capable, useful, responsible, or indispensable becomes part of our identity, constant movement can give us somewhere to go without having to acknowledge what we need, what we feel, or what may need to change.

          Capability and avoidance can coexist.

And sometimes capability gives avoidance an excellent place to hide.

In this episode, Monica offers one deceptively simple question that can help expose the difference between necessary preparation and protective delay:

If this were already good enough, what would I have to do next?

The answer may tell you far more than another productivity system ever could.

Because the goal isn’t to become less capable. It’s to have more choice—to know whether you’re consciously choosing a behavior or whether you’ve become trapped by a strategy that once helped you feel safe.

If you’re beginning to recognize the patterns, survival strategies, and identities that have been quietly shaping your choices, Return to Herself is an opportunity to take that investigation deeper.

Beginning October 5, this live four-week coaching experience will help you move beyond recognizing your patterns and begin reconnecting with the woman underneath the pressure, perfectionism, and expectations.

        • Avoidance Isn’t the Problem: What Is It Protecting You From?

What if avoidance isn’t the problem?

          What if it’s evidence?

We tend to interpret avoidance as a character flaw.

          I’m procrastinating.

          I need more discipline.

          I’m inconsistent.

I keep getting in my own way.

          I’m self-sabotaging.

But what if we’ve been asking the wrong question?

In this episode of Unshakeable Belief, we begin our September investigation into avoidance by looking beneath the behavior instead of judging it.

Because avoidance often does something very effectively: it gives us immediate relief.

Put off the email and you don’t have to risk hearing no today.

Delay the difficult conversation and the tension temporarily disappears.

Keep researching instead of submitting and you don’t have to find out how someone will respond to your work.

          For a moment, avoidance works.

And that matters, because every time avoiding something reduces discomfort, the brain receives information: this strategy helped.

Over time, a behavior that once protected us can begin limiting us.

In this episode, I’m exploring why we can deeply want something and still avoid the actions required to move toward it, how avoidance can slowly erode self-trust, and why understanding a protective behavior doesn’t mean excusing it.

It gives us more information with which to choose what happens next.

          Instead of beginning with:

“How do I make myself do this?”

I want you to try a different question:

“What does some part of me believe will happen if I do?”

          Maybe the answer is rejection.

          Criticism.

          Failure.

          Conflict.

          Uncertainty.

          Being misunderstood.

          Being seen.

Or perhaps something you haven’t identified yet.

You don’t have to change it today.

          For now, we’re collecting evidence.

          Because investigators don’t judge evidence.

          They study it.

And when we investigate the pattern, we reclaim the power to choose.

          RETURN TO HERSELF

If you’re ready to go deeper into the behaviors, beliefs, and survival strategies shaping the way you think, respond, and make decisions, I’d love to invite you into Return to Herself.

Beginning October 5, this live 4-week coaching experience will help you move beyond simply recognizing your patterns and begin reconnecting with who you are underneath the pressure, perfectionism, expectations, and protective strategies.

        • From Performance to Peace: When Perfectionism No Longer Gets to Lead

What if healing from perfectionism doesn’t mean perfectionism disappears?

What if freedom is learning that it no longer gets to make your decisions?

In this final episode of our August series on perfectionism, we’re moving from investigation into choice.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve looked beneath perfectionism to understand what it may actually be protecting. We’ve explored criticism, rejection, shame, failure, vulnerability, visibility, and the enormous cost of continually moving the finish line.

But understanding the pattern is only the beginning.

In this episode, I’m exploring what happens when perfectionism still shows up—but you stop automatically believing everything it says.

We’ll talk about the difference between awareness and transformation, why healing doesn’t require eliminating every fearful thought, and how perfectionism can disguise fear as responsibility, preparation, or wisdom.

I’ll also share one of the most important shifts I’ve made in my own life: moving away from the pursuit of certainty and toward faithfulness.

          Because perfectionism wants guarantees.

          It wants the whole map.

It wants to know that if we prepare enough, perform well enough, and control enough, we can somehow eliminate criticism, rejection, disappointment, or failure.

But life doesn’t offer that kind of certainty.

So perhaps peace isn’t something waiting for us once we finally get everything right.

Perhaps peace is something we learn to practice while we are still becoming.

Before you leave this episode, I’ll give you three questions to use the next time perfectionism starts getting loud:

What is this voice trying to protect?

Is that protection still necessary today?

What would the next faithful step look like instead?

          Not the perfect step.

          Not the safest step.

          The next faithful one.

          Behavior leaves clues.

          Curiosity replaces shame.

          Truth creates freedom.

And you were made for more.
