Editorial Reviews:
Barbara Edelman gives a lively performance of Deborah Camp's book on notorious Civil War-era bandit queen Belle Starr. This romantic retelling of Starr's tumultuous love affairs with some of the most infamous men of her time - including Jesse James and Cole Younger - lets Edelman's skill in recreating accents shine through the characters' spirited dialogue. She slips easily into different voices while keeping up the momentum of the story as it takes listeners from Starr's teenaged years to the heartbreaking end of her relationship with Younger.

Not Leland
Well I had to give this at least five stars! My Dad made me interested in the old West and the outlaws and such places as Robbers Cave and a few of their hideouts in various states. So I fell in love with the Belle Starr story! I was a little disappointed at finding out about some of their robberies after the fact and then not a lot of information concerning the crime. But I realize it would take twice as many pages to fill in the rest of their lives. A lot of people looked upon Belle Starr, the Youngers and the James, as heroes, and at times maybe they were. This book put a romantic twist on parts of their lives, which I enjoyed very much. I loved the personal touch Deborah Camp gave them.It was very exciting to read of them in such a fashion. Taking into consideration this book of fiction I was pleasantly surprised to see actual true events that I remember reading when I was a youngster in history books I never knew that she had two s

More of a Nag Than An Outlaw
This caught my attention as I love reading novels about women that really existed, espcially strong, gutsy ones. This is disappointed me tho, despite its excellent writing style. This novel tells the story of Belle Starr's ongoing romance with legendary outlaw, Cole Younger. It begins during the Civil War when Belle (a true Rebel) provides a group of Confederate bushwackers (consisting of Cole, Jesse James, and her own brother) some valuable information regarding some nearby Yankees. Belle thinks this one lone espisode qualifies her as spy material.. Unfortunately, this is the most courageous thing she ever does. From this point of the novel on, Belle becomes a bed hopper and a nag. She hangs around the outlaws, but is not one herself. While they are planning bank robberies, she nags and complains at them. When they are stealing horses, she is taking the money and once again, yelling or complaining at one of them. Meantime, she is cuckolding her husband, by sleeping with his fellow bandit, Cole. And the way she speaks to her mother in law is most appalling. When fate takes a bad twist, Belle abandons her children and hops in bed with Cole's cousin.
