Paul's Positive Podcast

Belonging and Big Dreams Through Esports

Listen Later

Paul’s Positive Podcast, hosted by Amy Iverson, brings you a truly uplifting positive human-interest story about inclusion, family, and unexpected opportunity.
In this episode, Amy shares the inspiring story of JD Mead, a dad in New Mexico who started an esports program at Portales High School for students who didn’t feel at home in traditional school activities. What began with just 11 students soon grew to around 50, showing how one caring idea can create a real sense of belonging.
The episode also follows JD’s son, Parker, whose love of gaming grew into something extraordinary. From getting his first Nintendo Switch to becoming one of New Mexico’s top high school esports players, Parker helped earn national attention for his school and is now heading to New Mexico State University to continue his esports journey.
Amy explores how this story is about much more than competition. It’s about giving young people a place to feel seen, turning overlooked talents into real opportunities, and watching a parent learn how to support a child both at home and as a coach.
Made especially for Paul, this episode is a warm reminder that when someone opens a door for others, lives can change in bigger and better ways than anyone imagined.
