Born Prospero Lorenzo Lambertini on March 31, 1675 as the third of five children in the noble family of Marcello Lambertini and Lucrezia Bulgarini in Bologna. He began his education at thirteen years old at Collegio Clementino in Rome. He received his education in rhetoric, Latin, philosophy, and theology. At the age of nineteen he received doctoral degrees in Sacred Theology and both ecclesiastical and civil law.

Lambertini became a Cardinal on December 9, 1726. After Pope Clement XII died on February 6, 1740 a conclave ensued. This conclave lasted a particularly long time (six months). Lambertini said to the Cardinals "If you wish to elect a saint, choose Gotti; a statesman, Aldrovandi; an honest man, me." The Conclave elected him on August 17, 1740. He Chose the name Benedict XIV.

He eventually died on May 3, 1758 and Pope Clement XIII succeeded him.
