Bernie Sanders dropped in on my home town of Visalia California this Memorial Day weekend and decided to take a shot at my one dad’s right to hire me for less than California’s government mandated $15 per hour minimum wage. Sanders made it clear how moral and selfish it is for evil corporations to take advantage of low wage workers and exploit them to make themselves rich.
I have a question for Bernie Sanders. Who do you think you are telling my dad that he was exploiting me when he hired me at the age of 8 or 9 at the “slave wage” of $1 per hour? My dad paid me that wage because that is what I was worth. I didn’t even know the names of all of the carpentry tools when hired but little by little I learned each of them as his “go for.” I went for his counter sink, diagonal cutters and chisel just to name a few. I gained the stamina to work late into the night on school nights and through the heat of the day on weekends. Tell me Senator Sanders does your title as Senator or even President of the US give you the right to tell my dad he is not allow to pay me these exploitative wages as he teaches me the intricacies of cutting, nailing and finally installing a form fired custom window sill? Now that I am a grown man do you have the right to tell me what wage I can or cannot except from someone who wants to pay me to do a job.
Do you know better than I do what is best for me. Do you think you are my father? Perhaps you think you are smarter or more moral than the rest of us. Maybe you think you are better qualified than me to judge how much I should pay the person who mows my lawn or scrubs my toilet. Maybe I don’t have enough experience or skill to convince any would be employers to pay me $15 an hour but I can talk them into taking a chance on my for $7. Would you rather me make zero? That is what I will make if you deny me the right to work for $7 and force me to take $15 or nothing. I will get nothing Senator Bernie Sanders. Thank you for all of your compassion. I guess its a good thing you are all for extending my unemployment benefits giving me free healthcare, subsidized housing and government food for my kids. I will be needing all of these mandatory alms very soon.
