Bessie Stringfield & The Dahomey Amazons

Listen Later

“The Motorcycle Queen of Miami,” Bessie Stringfield was the first African American woman to ride across the United States as a solo motorcyclist.  Her countries took her across the world, performing in carnival shows & serving as a citizen courier for the U.S. Army in WWII.  Her determination, grit, and courage to challenge societal norms and pursue her passion in the face of adversity make her an extraordinary figure in American history.

The Agojie warriors of Dahomey left a lasting impact on West African history and culture. While their involvement in the slave trade and the potential mistreatment of women is certainly problematic, their place as symbols of strength, power, and gender equality cannot be ignored. As their legacy continues to inspire and influence modern media and art, it is important to acknowledge both their achievements and their flaws in order to fully understand the complex history of the region.
