Most travelers only see Mount Fuji on a rushed half-day tour, snapping one photo at Lake Kawaguchi before heading straight back to Tokyo. But this time, I wanted something different — the quieter roads, the hidden viewpoints, and the lakes most people skip.

So I grabbed a rental car, mapped out a loose plan, and drove through the Fuji Five Lakes region looking for the best reflections and the clearest views of Japan’s most iconic mountain. I stopped at Lake Motosu, Lake Shoji, Lake Saiko, and finally Oishi Park on Lake Kawaguchi — each one offering a totally different angle of Mount Fuji.

From the famous 1,000-yen bill viewpoint to completely empty lakeshores, every stop felt like a new version of Fuji. But the thing that shocked me most… wasn’t a lake at all.

While driving through fresh snow, something bright red popped out of the landscape — a lone Coca-Cola vending machine in the middle of nowhere, glowing against the white snow with Mount Fuji behind it. I didn’t plan it. I didn’t expect it. But it might have been the most “perfectly Japanese” moment of the entire trip.

And on my final night, I went back to Oishi Park and found the whole scene transformed by snow — quiet, empty, and absolutely unreal. A Fuji apple in hand, Mount Fuji in front of me… the perfect ending to a day I’ll never forget.

If you’re planning your own Mount Fuji trip, or want to know which lakes are worth visiting, this vlog breaks down my full experience, the views, the drive, and the one surprising moment I never saw coming.
