Terrible tragedy was the catalyst for Virginia's discovery of the power of compassion. She has been a victim of domestic violence, a single parent to four children, a step-parent, and when her youngest child was two weeks old her husband was diagnosed with ALS more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It was compassion that saved her although she wouldn't realize that until she had experienced much more heartache.

Later, when she reflected on her life, she discovered that practicing self-compassion and compassion for her husband, children and others saved her and that had she been more open to compassion through these trials she would have weathered them much better. She discovered the healing power of compassion.

Virginia was inspired to learn more about compassion. She has studied extensively about the science of compassion including the psychological and physical health benefits of compassion, how compassion can be developed and how it helps us heal and thrive in every area of our lives.
