Jack Allison’s loss of balance had nothing to do with the sway of the boat, and he hit the deck hard on his ass. At that moment a chilly plume of ocean spray arced high and splattered his torso with saltwater, but his face didn’t appear to register this new wetness nor the pain from his fall, as it remained as it had been: held frozen in a gaze for the tossing sea before him and that which lay beneath the choppy waves. Eventually some part of him, that which could not be seen, sought escape and forced him to crawl backwards from the ship's edge, his eyes wide enough to make the irises resemble stranded cheerios in bowls of milk. Jack’s body continued to move back and away until he bumped up against the cockpit door, and as if some spell that held him were suddenly broken, he quickly shot to his feet and tore open the cockpit door. Sitting at a small table in this compartment he found both his Captain and his lover: Cait Raft, who looked up from her magazine just as Jack barged into the room. She arched an eyebrow that quickly fell into an expression of great concern, in line with the rest of her face, as she carefully considered Jack’s frantic demeanor. She let her companion steady himself for a moment and regulate his harsh breathing, until finally he gulped and said breathlessly, “Cait..We’re gonna need a bigger chat.”
