The "church calendar" likes to usurp the Bible. We've looked recently at what Christians do when they melt their teology down to "heaven/hell" and "saved/lost" or when they become enamored of such creatures as the "early church fathers." All of these things lead to a hunger for the temporal and carnal at the expense of the eternal and the spiritual... especially during holiday seasons.
