This coming month is Recovery Month. We will have a sermon series entitled, One Day At A Time., a mantra most everyone in recovery is certainly familiar! This series will be based on the 12-Step program made famous by Alcoholics Anonymous. We know that addiction can take on many forms, not just alcohol. Each week, we'll not only hear a sermon based on some of the steps, but we'll also hear some personal testimonies of people who have overcome their additions. These testimonies are always so powerful for us to hear; they give us faith that we, too, can overcome the obstacles in our lives.

This Sunday, we'll be covering Steps 1, 2, and 3 of the 12-Step program. Rev. Keith Mozingo will be preaching a message entitled, Hit Rock Bottom? Take A Step!

Jesus tells the disciples a parable:

“When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his angels with him, the Son of Humanity will take his place on his glorious throne. Then all the nations will be arranged before him and he will sort the people out, much as a shepherd sorts out sheep and goats, putting sheep to his right and goats to his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by God! Take what’s coming to you in this realm. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation. And here’s why:

I was hungry and you fed me,

I was thirsty and you gave me a drink,

I was homeless and you gave me a room,

I was shivering and you gave me clothes,

I was sick and you stopped to visit,

I was in prison and you came to me.’

“Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Sire, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’

“Then he will turn to the ‘goats,’ the ones on his left, and say, ‘Get out, worthless goats! You’re good for nothing but the fires of hell. And why? Because—

I was hungry and you gave me no meal,

I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,

I was homeless and you gave me no bed,

I was shivering and you gave me no clothes,

Sick and in prison, and you never visited.’

“Then those ‘goats’ are going to say, ‘Sire, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn’t help?’

“He will answer them, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me—you failed to do it to me.’

 “Then those ‘goats’ will be herded to their eternal doom, but the ‘sheep’ to their eternal reward.”

Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. As he came to the entrance of the village he met a woman, a widow, gathering firewood. He asked her, “Please, would you bring me a little water in a jug? I need a drink.” As she went to get it, he called out, “And while you’re at it, would you bring me something to eat?”

She said, “I swear, as surely as your God lives, I don’t have so much as a biscuit. I have a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a bottle; you found me scratching together just enough firewood to make a last meal for my son and me. After we eat it, we’ll die.”

Elijah said to her, “Don’t worry about a thing. Go ahead and do what you’ve said. But first make a small biscuit for me and bring it back here. Then go ahead and make a meal from what’s left for you and your son. What wonderful love our Creator has lavished upon us! Look at it! We are called children of God! That is truly what we are. Yet that is also why the world does not recognize us or take us seriously, for it has no idea who God is or what God is doing. Nevertheless, friends, that is exactly what we are: children of God. And that is only the beginning. Who knows what we will become! What we do know is that when Christ is openly revealed, we shall see Christ, and upon seeing Christ, we shall become like Christ. All of us who eagerly await the coming of Christ keep ourselves prepared, taking the radiant purity of Jesus’s life as the model for our own.

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” the expert asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you read it?”

The legal expert answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

But the legal expert wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

In reply Jesus said: 

“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 

A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 

But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 

The next day the Samaritan took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ the Samaritan said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told the legal expert, “Go and do likewise.”
