The titles 'Son of God' and 'Son of Man' are among the most recognized descriptions of Jesus, but their true depth is often missed. A common assumption is that 'Son of God' points to His divinity and 'Son of Man' points to His humanity. While Jesus is fully God and fully man, reducing these titles to that simple distinction misses their real power. 'Son of God' is indeed a direct claim to divinity, something the Pharisees found deeply offensive because they already knew He was a man. What shocked them was the claim that this man from Nazareth was also God.

The title 'Son of Man,' however, is not primarily about Jesus being human. It is rooted in Daniel chapter 7, where a figure described as one like a son of man receives authority, glory, and dominion that belong only to God. This is a title of action and authority. Jesus used it throughout the Gospels to claim the power to forgive sin, to give life, and to return one day as the righteous Judge of all creation. The religious leaders understood this perfectly, which is exactly why they sentenced Him to death for blasphemy. In Revelation chapter 1, the apostle John sees Jesus in His glorified state and falls at His feet as though dead, a fitting response to the one who holds the keys of Death and Hades.

This truth carries a direct and personal challenge. Jesus having sovereign authority over all creation means He has sovereign authority over your life. It is easy to acknowledge Him as Savior while still living as though you are in control. But the titles Son of God and Son of Man are a call to full surrender. One day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. The question is not whether that will happen. The question is whether you bow now in faith, receiving Him as Savior, or whether you face Him later as Judge.

In John chapter 5, Jesus heals a man who had been lame for nearly four decades. The man had no faith, no expectation, and no idea who Jesus was. He did not ask for healing. Jesus simply came to him. Rather than celebrating this miracle, the Pharisees were outraged because it happened on the Sabbath. They had built an elaborate system of rules around the day of rest, and in doing so, they had turned a gift from God into a measuring stick for their own righteousness. This is the heart of legalism: the belief that God's approval is tied to how well you follow the rules. But the gospel tells us that the standard before God is perfection, and none of us meet it. Our favor before God is not found in our obedience. It is found in Christ, and in Him alone.

The healing of the lame man also speaks directly to the prosperity gospel, the idea that God always wills healing and blessing, and that suffering is a sign of insufficient faith. Paul wrote the book of Philippians from a jail cell, facing death, and he did not see his suffering as a contradiction to his faith. He understood that suffering for Christ is part of the calling, not a punishment. God uses difficulty to accomplish something greater in us and through us. The eternal promises that await us in glory make every earthly hardship small by comparison, not because the pain is not real, but because it is not the final word.

Both legalism and the prosperity gospel make the same fundamental mistake: they put the focus on you. Your obedience. Your faith. Your performance. The gospel points somewhere else entirely. It points to Christ. He is the source of your favor with God. He works even when your faith is small. The comfort found in suffering does not come from finding the answer within yourself. It comes from trusting the One who is greater than your circumstances, bigger than your doubts, and not limited by anything you bring to the table.

One of the most heartfelt concerns among parents and grandparents is wondering where their children stand with the Lord. Scripture speaks directly to this with both honesty and hope. In John 4, a royal official came to Jesus pleading for his son's life, and what followed was more than a physical healing. The father believed, and his entire household was transformed. His faith became the doorway through which God moved in his family. At the same time, Proverbs 22:6 is best understood as a wisdom principle rather than a guarantee. It describes how God has designed the world to normally work, and that distinction matters because it protects parents from carrying guilt that was never theirs to bear.

Scripture is also honest about the painful reality that godly parents can have children who walk away. Samuel, Hezekiah, Adam, and Isaac all experienced this heartbreak. These examples remind us that a parent's faithfulness does not automatically produce a child's faith, because faith is not inherited. Every person must make their own decision to repent and follow Jesus. What a parent can do is model an authentic, consistent walk with the Lord, not just on Sunday mornings but in the quiet, everyday moments that children are always watching. Nothing turns a child away from Jesus faster than a faith that looks like performance.

For the parent or grandparent carrying the weight of a wayward child, the most important truth to hold onto is that God does not operate on our timetable. The seeds of a faithful life do not expire, and the story is not over. Jesus loves your children even more than you do, and He is working in ways you cannot yet see. Your responsibility is faithfulness. Leave the outcomes in His hands.

It is a picture of the gospel, pointing to Jesus Christ as the new head who does what Adam failed to do by protecting and providing through His death and resurrection. The family and the church are deeply connected, and when either loses clarity on God's design, everything downstream suffers. The call for every believer is to let Scripture shape culture, not the other way around.

Modern culture breeds unprecedented insecurity through social media's highlight reels, where we compare our messy reality to others' curated perfection. Yet John the Baptist offers a powerful example of true security when his disciples worried about losing followers to Jesus. John's remarkable confidence came from understanding his mission: pointing people to Christ, not building his own influence. His famous declaration that Jesus must increase while he must decrease wasn't defeat but security rooted in purpose and identity.

Christ's seal on our salvation differs fundamentally from earthly seals that expire when kings die or lose authority. Jesus rose from the dead and lives forever, making His promises eternal without expiration dates. His kingdom has no territorial boundaries, meaning there's nowhere we can go beyond His reach or authority. This understanding transforms how we face daily struggles, freeing us from performance-based security and bringing peace amid life's uncertainties.

True security comes not from our circumstances, success, or spiritual performance, but from Christ's finished work. Whether facing job loss, health concerns, or relationship problems, our identity rests in an eternal King whose authority never expires. This week, identify where you're seeking security outside of Christ and practice John's confidence by embracing that your worth comes from Jesus' unchanging love and eternal promises.

When believers gather, we function as a temple, and individually, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. In the eternal temple, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil will be absent, guaranteeing we'll never be separated from God again.
