When love is discussed in public, we almost always see young couples. Older people are rarely shown—and when they are, it is without passion. Why? Because many of us grew up with shame. Because the image of older people is often “genderless.” Because families react with irritation when grandma or grandpa talks about new partners. Because there is hardly any room for intimacy in nursing homes. This silence separates us from one another. It makes people lonely. And it robs them of a piece of their dignity.
