In this episode, Dustin and Ghazali talk with Conni Rasmussen to discuss the unique benefits of outdoor education and how educators can incorporate outdoor learning into their curriculum for deeper engagement.
Growing up near the water Conni was either under it, in it, or in a watercraft. It was her playground and later became the playground of her boys. Combining her love for the outdoors and teaching, she earned a BS in Marine Biology and a MS from University of Oxford on International Science Education and Statistical Research Methods. Her career as a secondary science educator in both USA and EU has been pure enjoyment. She was an outdoor junkie as a field biologist before she became a teacher where she counted alligator populations in the Everglades National Park of Florida, worked on dolphin boats for the aquarium, and in coastal Virginia state parks and National Audubon. Over the years she has taken 100's of teens camping in both USA and EU from Switzerland to Sardinia to the wild Outer Banks of North Carolina. Having been a teacher in a private Swiss Boarding School housed with the wealthiest to some low socioeconomic schools in the USA, she is certain of a common thread between the haves and have nots: they learn, laugh, and engage more with mother nature surrounding them than a classroom of 4 walls. In 2019 she founded a small business run by teens, Simple Teen Life. Their mission is simple. Slow teen life down. They help parents find ways to spend some simple downtime with their teens away from screens and what better place than outdoors. Currently she is writing a book entitled, The Death of Downtime for Teens based on 10 years of data I collected as a teacher.
