In this episode of Beyond the Scope, I sit down with Dr. Ricky (Dr. Richard J Brown), a double-boarded plastic surgeon who unexpectedly became a patient after a backyard grill explosion caused severe burns. He shares his perspective on transitioning from surgeon to patient, the challenges of navigating burn unit care, and the mental and physical resilience required for recovery. We also discuss how this experience deepened his empathy for patients and reinforced the importance of mindset in healing.

One of my favorite episodes of this whole podcast, Dr. Laura Vater, a GI oncologist and talented writer regarding medical student and resident wellness breaks down some of the ways medical training has changed and must change for the better. Somehow I ended up being a case study in this episode as this is a very much "do as I say, not as I do" story since I recorded this only a couple hours after arriving back home from a redeye cross country flight.
