Artemisia Gentileschi’s Bathsheba reinterprets the biblical story, where King David, upon seeing Bathsheba bathing, succumbs to desire, leading to adultery, deception, and murder. The painting centers on Bathsheba, surrounded by her attendants, while David is subtly positioned in the background. Gentileschi, a pioneering Baroque artist, often depicted women with dignity, shaped by her own struggles in a male-dominated society. Influenced by Caravaggio, her dramatic use of light highlights Bathsheba’s presence beyond being an object of male desire. This work, co-created with Codazzi and Gargiulo, reflects Gentileschi’s mastery in storytelling and challenges traditional portrayals of biblical women, transforming them into powerful figures with depth and agency.
