Did you know it's possible to do godly/spiritual work, only to have those efforts not be acceptable to God? It's easier to do than you might think. Nevertheless, should this ever prove to be the category we fall into, there is a remedy! There IS a way out! Jesus tells us to "Do the first works". Let's map this out with a look into Rev 2:2-5.
