Bible Study - Pentecostal Lighthouse Church

The group explored biblical fasting as a spiritual discipline centered on self-denial, humility, and drawing closer to God — not as a transactional act. Key themes included the contrast between accidental and intentional fasting, the role of consumerism in weakening self-denial, and practical steps for beginning a fasting practice. The session closed with a call to join an upcoming prayer and fasting calendar in preparation for a church revival. 12

Core Teaching Points

• Jesus assumes disciples will fast — Matthew 6:16 uses "when you fast," not "if you fast" 5
• Fasting = practiced self-denial preparing for required self-denial later; Paul's principle: "I discipline my body… lest I become disqualified" 67
• Rending the heart, not garments (Joel 2:12–13): fasting should involve repentance, brokenness, submission, and surrender to God 89
• Consumerism tension: culture rewards consumption (points programs, Amazon, free shipping); fasting exercises the "no muscle" against this pull 1011
• Isaiah 58: God rejects empty ritual fasting — the fast He desires loosens bonds of wickedness, leads to compassion and justice 1213
• Fasting is not a vending machine — the goal is closeness to God, not extracting a spiritual outcome 114
