Jeremiah had been hated and persecuted by his own people, but now in desperation they turn to Jeremiah.  The people feared the future, but they had already predetermined that they should flee to Egypt.  It seems rather that hearing from God on what they should do… they were more interested in getting God’s stamp of approval on what they had already decided to do.

Even though the surviving Judean soldier Johanan knew of a plot against Gedaliah, Gedaliah refused to believe that was even possible.  That leads us to the historical end of Judah as an independent nation, Governor Gedaliah’s assassination.

It finally happens.  Jerusalem falls to Babylon, the people of the city now will need to endure capture, judgment, torture, destruction and exile.  Zedekiah briefly escapes but that does not end well.

Jeremiah gets thrown into a muddy cistern to die because some accused him of treason, when all he was doing was trying to save the people.  King Zedekiah also could survive the siege if they only would trust God.  What did they need to do?

Jerusalem is about to fall and be desolate for decades. Jerusalem formally a cautionary tale that people would hiss at and wonder at what they must have done for God to bring such destruction, will become a testimony to God’s goodness.  The nations on earth will tremble in awe at Israel’s prosperity and peace.
