On this week's episode, Jamie and Guy discuss the concept of "bidding" for emotional connection as taught by Dr. John Gottman. A "bid" is any attempt from one partner to another for attention, affirmation, affection or any other positive connection. Bids show up in simple ways - a smile, a wink, and in more complex ways like a request for advice or help. They can be positive or negative. When we’re turning towards our partner - that’s a positive bid. When we're turning away from our partner - that’s a negative bid. Every interaction is a potential bid. The importance of giving consistent positive bids to your partner cannot be understated. Dr. Gottman says it’s the biggest protection against divorce. Listen to hear how Jamie and Guy have learned to use bids in their relationships and the benefits that come from it.
