TANDEM RELAY INFO:

Situation

Bases empty.

The ball is hit to the left-center field fence.

When the outfielder shows numbers, we know this hit is at least a double.

Our goal now is simple:

Do NOT let the double turn into a triple.

Defensive Responsibilities

Left Fielder (LF)

Fields the ball cleanly off the wall

Makes a strong, accurate throw toward the cutoff

Shortstop (SS) – Primary Cutoff

Goes out to the outfield grass as the main cutoff

Gets square to the ball and the target

Controls the throw and decides where it goes next

Second Baseman (2B) – Tandem / Backup

Trails the shortstop by 10–15 feet

Backs up the shortstop in case of an errant throw

Ready to receive the ball if needed

First Baseman (1B)

Watches the runner touch first base

Trails the runner toward second base

Gets in position to receive any throw to second

Right Fielder (RF)

Moves in to back up throws to second base

Pitcher (P)

Hustles to back up third base

Prevents extra bases on overthrows

Coaching Emphasis

Everyone has a job—no spectators

Hustle and communication matter

Good positioning turns doubles into routine doubles

This play is about team defense, not arm strength

Goal

Keep the double from becoming a triple.
