Then Biggy realized that pain and sorrow are concomitants of the living, and that it is necessary for him to do marvels. He felt like making a dummy of himself and beg him to solve all the problems for him. He wanted to go back to school, study calculus, memorize lyrics, draw vases, learn about seismic waves in science class, have a streak of good luck, live in tranquility, and have reunions with his friends.

그때 Biggy 는 깨달았다. 고통과 슬픔은 인생의 동반자라는 것을 말이다. 또한 자신이 놀라운 일을 해내햐 한다는것을 깨달았다. 그는 또다른 자신을 만들어 내어 그 대신 모든 문제를 해결해달라고 빌고싶었다. 그는 학교로 다시 돌아가고싶었고, 미적분학을 공부하고 싶었고, 서정적인 노래 가사를 외우고싶었고, 화분을 그리고 싶었고, 과학 시간에 지진파에 대해 배우고싶었고, 일련의 행운을 느끼고 싶었고, 고요 속에서 살고 싶었고, 친구들과 모임을 갖고 싶었다.

“Tell me something funny, boy. Don’t depress me with all your sad stories,” pleaded Biggy.

“Sure. You know, my turtle earned this medal for me. Winning the turtle race is harder than winning a lottery. The final duel was crazy! The turtle race happens when a lunar eclipse occurs. My townspeople relished this race so much. A cascade of people from other towns pulled oars to come to our town and watch this race. I even had a big kettle, filled with fresh water, to keep my turtle in there. Of course, I never forgot to polish my turtle’s shell.”

“재미난것좀 이야기해봐, 얘야. 너의 슬픈 이야기로 더이상 날 슬프게 하지 말아줘,” Biggy 가 부탁했다.

“그래. 이 메달은 내 거북이가 날 위에 따준 메달이야. 거북이 레이스에서 이기는건 복권당첨되는보다 더 힘들다구. 마지막 결투는 정말 치열했지! 거북이 레이스는 월식때 치뤄져. 우리 마을 사람들은 이 레이스를 정말 좋아했는데. 이 경기를 보기위해 폭포처럼 많은 사람들이 다른 마을에서 노를 저어서 온다니까. 난 심지어 거북이를 키우기 위해서 맑은 물로 채워진 큰 솥도 가지고 있었어. 당연히 거북이의 등을 광내는것 쯤이야 한시도 잊은 적 없지.”

“Also, I loved spending time with my turtles in the attic.”

“Turtles? You had many of them?”

“Yes. Let me continue my story. The attic had many porcelains engraved with turtles, because my favorite animal is a turtle! I love patting them. They are monotonous, make a din all the time, and swing their pelvis all the time! So it can be very strenuous to train novice turtles, but they helped me redeem all the loans I had. Oh, and they love eating pests such as mosquitoes!”

“그리고 난 내 거북이들과 다락방에서 함께 시간을 보내는 걸 정말 좋아했어.”

“거북이들이라고? 한마리가 아니였단말야?”

“그래. 내 이야기를 계속 하지. 그 다락방 안에는 거북이들이 새겨져있는 도자기들이 되게 많았어. 왜냐하면 내가 가장 좋아하는 동물은 거북이라서 말야. 난 그들을 쓰다듬는게 너무 좋아. 그들은 단조롭고, 소란스럽고, 골반을 항상 흔들지! 그래서 초보 거북이들을 훈련시키는건 정말 힘든일이지만 그들이 내가 갖고 있던 빚을 청산 할 수 있도록 도와주었어. 아, 그리고 그들은 모기 같은 유해동물 먹는것을 사랑했지!”

“What an interesting anecdote you have!” Biggy exclaimed.

“Yeah I know. My turtles also loved cereal, so I had a repository filled with cereal. Although I had scant provisions for myself, I tried my best to give what I can for my turtles. So sometimes I had an ambivalent feeling toward them, because I made beautiful vests for them when I was wearing rags. Man, now you’re making me fall into nostalgia!” the boy shouted.

“Oh, and I wish I had bought a bottle of ale for my father before we reached a juncture. I miss them dearly.”

“넌 정말 흥미로운 일화를 가지고 있구나!” Biggy 가 외쳤다.

“응, 나도 알아. 내 거북이들은 씨리얼을 그렇게 좋아했어. 그래서 난 씨리얼로 가득찬 창고도 있었지. 내 식량은 부족했지만 난 내 거북이들에게 줄수있는것을 주기 위해서 최선을 다했어. 그래서 가끔 그들을 향한 내 마음이 애증의 감정일때도 있어. 왜냐면 내가 누더기를 입고 다닐때 걔네들을 위해서는 예쁜 조끼를 만들어줬거든. 참나, 너 때문에 향수병 걸리게 생겼다!” 소년이 큰소리로 말했다.

“아, 그리고 위기에 쳐하기 전에 아버지께 에일 맥주 한 병 사드렸을걸, 하는 아쉬움이 있어. 부모님이 정말 보고싶다.”
