Bilateral Defence Cooperation in the Arctic

Listen Later

In today’s Expert Series episode, Dr. James Fergusson discusses the continued importance of U.S.-Canada defence cooperation in Arctic, despite political and foreign policy shifts in the U.S.

He highlights how Canada's defence strategy remains closely tied to U.S. priorities—especially with NORAD and aerospace defence—and also discusses the complex and long-term challenges of expanding Canadian defence infrastructure in the Arctic, particularly in relation to F-35 integration and the costs associated with such projects. Fergusson is cautious about the potential for major geopolitical conflict in the Arctic, asserting that some of the threats might be overstated. The key issue identified for Canada is following through on defence commitments and maintaining strong diplomatic and military ties with the U.S.
