Key takeaway: Building a child's confidence and self-worth is a multi-year investment, not a quick fix — there's no single magic phrase, but consistent, informed effort (and honest communication from the professionals around a child) compounds over years.

This episode features Joanna, a final-year PhD candidate in Speech Pathology at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), currently at Monash University as a visiting exchange scholar. Joanna's research sits at the intersection of speech pathology and game design — she builds gamified exercise tools that make repetitive oral-motor and voice therapy homework feel like play, for children and adults alike. Her own path into the profession was anything but conventional: she started in an Engineering degree before making an exceptionally rare internal transfer into Speech Pathology at HKU.

Isa Pin is a former lawyer, wedding photographer, online business owner, and mother of a young autistic son. After noticing changes in his development at 18 months, she spent almost a year seeking answers before he was formally diagnosed at two and a half.
Isa’s message to parents is simple: this is a long journey. Looking after yourself is not selfish—it is what allows you to keep supporting your family.

What I Learned Comparing Notes With a Speech Therapist in Hong Kong
I've known Little Ms Feather for over a decade. We met in Hong Kong before I started speech pathology training. A few months ago I discovered her Cantonese podcast and had absolutely no idea it was her.
So of course I got her on Bilingual Speech Spot.

Your child can hear—but are they truly processing what they hear?
Some children pass a standard hearing test, yet still miss instructions, become easily distracted, or struggle to follow conversations in noisy environments. Are these signs of attention difficulties, language comprehension challenges, or the highly debated condition known as Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)?
In this episode, Chloe speaks with Winnie, a dual-qualified professional who trained in speech pathology in Hong Kong before qualifying as an audiologist in the UK. With expertise across both speech pathology and audiology, Winnie explains the difference between being able to hear sound and being able to process it. She also compares the therapy landscape across the UK NHS, Hong Kong, and Australia.
We also explore the reality of accessing public speech therapy in the UK, including lengthy waiting lists, the so-called “postcode lottery,” and how where a family lives can directly affect whether a child receives support.

June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, and transgender voice therapy is such an important topic — so this June, we wanted to bring this voice therapy story to you.
What if the voice modulation tricks that make storytelling and presentations land are built on the exact same science as gender-affirming voice therapy?
In this episode, we explore two very different worlds — through one shared set of techniques:
🎭 How pitch and resonance work can make your storytelling or presentations more compelling
💨 A simple "vocal warm-up" technique you can use before any presentation

🗣️ How to balance authority and femininity within a single voice
Special thanks to Dr. Yeptain Leung for his clinical expertise in voice therapy and gender-affirming care.
