In 1929, Billy Southworth took over the Cardinals as manager. He tried a new tough style of managing, and it didn’t work. He was demoted to managing their Rochester club where he won 3 pennants in a row, but after a bad year and excessive drinking in grievance of his wife’s death, he was let go again. Things started to turn around for Billy in 1935—he got remarried, and Branch Rickey gave him another chance with the Cards.
