Political homophobia and anti-feminism have been gaining ground, increasingly shaping policy, and rhetoric across the globe. In Europe, anti-migrant politics often utilize genderjustice and sexual rights discourse to frame migrants and refugees as threats to “European” values and norms. The panel will explore both the dynamics of right-wing politics and the robust national and transnational responses initiated by grassroots movements, civil society organizations, activists, social workers, teachers, and academics. By bringing together perspectives from the Middle Eastern and Sub-Saharan African diaspora, the panel will discuss the emerging possibilities for transnational solidarity and queer feminist life.

Queer migration has challenged the heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions that have traditionally circumscribed both academic and activist discourses on migration. This panel focuses on the contemporary issues in the field of queer migration by accounting for the experiences of cross-border mobilities, displacement, and exile from an interdisciplinary and transnational perspective. The panelists will explore the themes of postcolonial colonial tensions in migration studies, trans* migrants and refugees, COVID-19, and the perspectives from queer affect, intimacy, and belonging.

Art has been used as a tool for queer migrants to negotiate their identities, resist oppression, and confront stereotypes. Activism has been a crucial aspect of queer migration studies, challenging heteronormative assumptions and advocating for the rights of queer migrants. This roundtable will bring together perspectives from art and academia to examine the ways in which art and activism have been used as tools to resist oppression and advocate for the rights of queer migrants.
