But what about the genetics claim in "The Transformation," that the virus mutates the host's DNA

to change its host into monsters? There is a speck of real science in there, says Harvard University

virologist Donald Coen. Retroviruses, the class that includes HIV, use the DNA in their host cell to

replicate, then leave behind their genetic information in the host. "There are lots of examples in

animals," he says. And Coen says it is possible to manipulate retroviruses. Some scientists hope

to use them as a vehicle to get genetic material into cells, he says, by piggybacking the useful

material onto the virus and then allowing the virus to copy its genetic material into the cell.

However, that kind of research is in early stages, Coen says. And though Peter Bishop says during

"The Transformation" that a person would need to know cutting-edge genetics to create the killer

virus, Coen says the Fringe scenario is far past the real capabilities of current genetic engineering-

-no virus could rewrite your entire genetic code.

Finally, this week, Fringe might have put to bed--at least for a while--one of our favorite bits of

suspect science: the memory tank. Agent Olivia Dunham had some of her former partner John

Scott's memories transferred into her own mind, and in previous episodes she's gone back in the

tank to seek more answers from him. This happens again in "The Transformation," but at the

conclusion Walter Bishop says her mind has expelled the last of Scott and her brainwaves are

back to normal. So hopefully Dunham won't have to stick electrodes to her forehead and get back

Whether or not someone believes these conspiracy theories, it is instructive to consider whether

the SARS-CoV-2 virus would make a so-called “good” biological weapon. Many countries around

the world (including the United States, Iraq, former Soviet Union, United Kingdom, Japan, and

Canada) used to have biological weapons programs, and some others (China, North Korea, and

Iran) are suspected of continuing to develop biological weapons.

Biological warfare involves the use infectious pathogens or toxins from living organisms to cause

death or disability in humans, animals, or plants. Deployment of a weapon can range from

something as simple as contaminating an adversary’s water source with feces or a dead carcass,

to spraying a highly sophisticated engineered pathogen across a battlefield. Although we often

consider humans as the targets, bioweapons can also be employed with devastating economic
