Members Reviews:
Traveling Cook is a great series.
Love the series and characters as well as the setting. I love food so enjoy reading about cooks. Plus I learn a lot about English cooking. I've visited London several times and seem to eat all kinds of food but not English. My last trip I made the effort to eat English food and was surprised and pleased with the experiences.
Too much head-hopping and repetition
My mum enjoyed this series so I thought I'd give it a go. It was okay but the editing was appalling. Head-hopping from paragraph to paragraph, repetition of dialog tags ("Blah, blah," X said thoughtfully. "I agree," Y said thoughtfully), the investigating policemen both have names that begin with 'Moll' and if I'd taken a drink every time the heroine was called 'the Junoesque cook' I'd have been squiffy by chapter six.
I get it. She's tall, big and has 'surprisingly beautiful dark blue eyes', another often repeated phrase. Stop telling me every few pages.
I was also grinding my teeth at the end when she says to the police, all wide-eyed bewilderment, "But I thought you knew who did it! It's so obvious! I've known for ages!"
Whatever. Call her Mary Sue and have done with it.
A great find
This is the first book I've read by Joyce Cato and I am firmly hooked. A great cast of well-realised, believable characters, murder, and an intelligent, assured amateur sleuth are all great ingredients for this murder mystery in the traditional mould but with a freshness that is delightful to read. A real pleasure, I'm definitely a fan, and can't wait to read more.
