This week's bite-site snack episode takes a look at director Robert Altman's neo-noir classic, The Long Goodbye, an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel. The movie moves the story from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Hard-boiled private eye Philip Marlowe takes on 70s Los Angeles and a plot involving a friend who may have murdered his wife, a mob boss looking for stolen money, unpleasant cops, a drunken novelist and his enigmatic wife, and a doctor not afraid to humiliate his patient in front of party guests—to name a few. Although not well received when it was originally released, Altman's take on the private eye movie has been hailed in recent years as a classic and a cornerstone film of the neo-noir genre.
