The Eclecticast

BJ 4. Book: A History Of Celibacy

Listen Later

This week Ben talks about the book A History Of Celibacy, bringing up some interesting facts, like the inversion in the perception of the female sexual drive, how female power has a strong connection to celibacy and the bizarre impetus to castrate young boys for their singing voices.
He also criticises the last chapter on modern celibacy for insufficiently interrogating the evangelical drive to commit young people to vows of chastity until marriage, blaming the perceived over-sexualisation of our culture on the sexual revolution rather than our capitalist society which feeds us gratifying images and isolates us by creating instability and insecurity, and the promotion of retreating into celibacy rather than attempting to alleviate the conditions that create the issues they see in the world.
