Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock that is composed mainly of carbon, along with various other elements including hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. It forms from the remains of plants that died millions of years ago and were buried in layers of sediment. Over time, heat and pressure caused the organic material in these layers to transform into coal.
