In this episode of the Dad Spotlight we interview Darren Carter about the state of Black fathers in society today as well as the importance of providing diverse experiences for our children to allow our kids to be ready for a culturally diverse world.
Darren Carter is founder of Darrenwcarter.com, a site focusing on Faith, Family, Fatherhood and a lot of Fun! He is also co-organizer of Cleveland Dads Group, a community of dads in Cleveland, Ohio who are active in their children’s lives and founder of All Geared Up – A Family Bike Event, an event that focuses on family time and healthy lifestyles. He’s an unconventional dad that shares his life’s journey in hopes that his errors as well as triumphs can be gleaned tidbits which can help his readers in any way possible.
At the recently Dad 2.0 conference Darren Carter was a panelist about the state of African American fathers in society today. In this panel they looked at the issues such as education, fatherhood and more as it related to Black fathers in today’s society.
Education was one of the largest issues that was addressed. This not only dealt with formal education but also talked about things like the learning of the past of a race. They talked about how people have to give time both in and outside of the home to help educate kids today.
Black fatherhood was also addressed. Studies have shown that Black fathers are more actively involved in the lives of their kids, moreso than other races. The challenge is that there is a media portrayal of Black fatherhood that does not address this.
In our interview with Darren Carter he shares that all fathers can act as social change agents to better advocate and educate kids and society to broaden the discourse about diversity.
Darren Carter also mentioned that there is traction and there have been numerous things that could be seen as a break-through but there is still a ways to go.
If you do not live in an area or know people different than you, Darren Carter says that you can still have conversations about diversity with your kids and open up opportunities for our kids to experience and meet people different than them. Giving your kids opportunities to step out and talk to people different from themselves will help them to be ready for the real world. While this is not a one time or a one event type of conversation or experience, you start the process and then continue this as much as you can. As Darren Carter says, the more conversations and experiences that we can collectively have the better that we all will be in the end and healing will occur.
