More Life: The Reentry Podcast introduces their Black History Month series, Reentry: The Next Civil Rights Movement. Tune into our episodes this entire month to learn more about the Black community and their experiences post incarceration. This month we will be highlighting reentry experiences of the Black community, celebrating Blacks who have made positive changes post incarceration, and discussing ways to support the Black community during their reentry process.

For the launch of our series, Dr. Tisha Smith joins VanKe’via for a discussion on the experiences of African-American men as they transition from incarceration to community. Dr. Smith is currently a licensed therapist in NYS and works at the Monroe County Department of Public Health in Rochester, NY. Prior to that she was the Director of Inmate Drug and Alcohol programming for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Her areas of research include criminal justice policy, homicide, criminal victimization, forensic entomology, gangs, and prison reentry.

Our conversation focuses on various aspects and factors that contribute to the successful reentry of African-American men. Dr. Smith discussed the importance of examining African American men experiences post incarceration and provided recommendations/suggestions to support them after release.
