Working Overtime The Podcast

Black Lives Matter (BLM)

Listen Later

In this extra episode, It's time to break my silence. Let's talk about  BLM. As a black person, for the past couple of weeks, it has been a whirlwind of emotions. How are you feeling? Have you suffered injustices and racial discrimination too? What can we do to support the Black Community? What do you want the world to share? This isn't one of our regularly scheduled episodes but I want to jump on to talk about everything that is going on currently. Are you ready? Let's chat for a bit.

[00:01 - 06:10] How Are You Feeling?

  • I talk about the protests that followed George Floyd's horrific death and all that is going on with the protests and police brutality.
  • Quick check-in, how are you feeling? Let me tell you how I truly feel
    • "There are some days where I feel like I can continue to move forward and I enjoy all the unity that has ensued from it"
    • "But there are also times where I feel extremely heavy and feel very low and scared, to be honest"
  • From violent to peaceful protests happening in Jacksonville, Florida.

[06:11 - 10:26] BLM Movement

  • These are my insights on how to support BLM movement in different ways:
    • If you're out protesting, that is incredible.
    • Donations
    • Supporting black-owned businesses (My big priority)
    • Sharing on social media
  • I want to share this one with you so we can really make a difference with our dollar.
  • My feeling towards white influencers who use their platforms to uplift the black community, women of color, and how you can just keep sharing information.
  • The biggest thing is sharing information continuously. Because people can't ignore it

[10:27 - 17:24] A Fight For Humanity

  • I talk about having allies for all ethnicities. This is no longer about Black people. This is a fight for everyone.
  • A common misunderstanding about the BLM movement that I want to correct: All Black Lives Matter, and that is gay, straight, trans, and everything in between. That is everyone.
  • I shed some light on the systemic change that we continue fighting.
    • Fix the foundation
    • Change is the inside
  • Final words from me
