Glenda Richardson (00:00): And this piece called “Black Lives Still Matter,” I did after I was watching the news and I saw Philando Castile just aspire right before my eyes. I was... I could not believe that somebody who seemingly had such a gentle soul was taken away that way.
(00:27): And I thought about this proverb. This is a proverb I'd done in a small format previously and I thought it was perfect for doing a piece that would speak to the fact that you might think you can snuff us out, but that's not going to happen. And even though these horrendous events happen, we are always going to come back and you cannot do that. And so that's why I called it Black Lives Still Matter.
(01:04): And then there are some of the iconic names of other people who were unarmed. I'm getting emotional. Who were unarmed and perished at the hands of police. And this was before George Floyd, so his name's not on it. But if you go around, you can see the names of the individuals and words, "I can't breathe." And some of the imagery was taken from newspapers. And the fact that it's green indicates the regeneration. You tried to bury us, you didn't know we were seeds. I could keep going.
(01:51): And then the last thing I'm going to say is the two items up at the front, up at the top, Michael Brown and Sandra Bland, those birds, represent their spirits.
