Ida Bell Wells-Barnett was born into slavery at the Bolling Farm near Holly Springs, Mississippi, on July 16, 1862. She was freed by the Emancipation Proclamation during the American Civil War and went on to become one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). 

This American investigative journalist and co-owner of the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight newspaper became one of the most famous Black women in the United States.
