Matthew 5:3 (NIV)

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

What does it mean to be poor in spirit? And why does the kingdom of heaven belong to those kinds of people?

To be poor in spirit is to understand that, when coming before God you have nothing to bring to the table, and he has everything to bring. It's that humility in understanding that all you have, and all that God wants, is you that brings the kingdom to your life here and now.
