This verse is so rich, it almost speaks for itself. Especially in The Passion Translation, because of the specific word flow. So I want to play two words in this verse which I spelled “BE–yond” and “BE–lief” on purpose. Both words are actually a composite of two smaller words to give you a complex idea.
First is the word BEyond — Be like be or ‘exist’ and yond like ‘over yonder,” it points past the visible horizon, beyond the surface of what we count or see, or hear, or feel. Our “being” is blessed beyond what our mental math can grasp. That old saying “count your blessings”? Yeah, it’s real. But sometimes, our math just ain’t mathin’ right.
Why? Because our minds are haunted by ghost numbers — the leftovers of past wounds, missed chances, and fears about what tomorrow might bring. These ghost numbers warp our calculations, making blessings look smaller or scarcer than they really are.
We get caught up in self-talk that doubts and discounts what Heaven already says is true about us. We are deeply and abundantly blessed, right here, in our current state of being–but it actually surpasses our here and now and transcends into our there and then…Let me put some theological sauce on it: there’s a cool word I learned while getting my Masters in Theology. It’s Translocation: this big $5 word simply means in Christ, individuals can experience God's blessings and favor in their present life on Earth while also resting in the fulfillment of heavenly blessings…Paul said we are already ‘seated in heavenly places’ with God through Christ!
Now, what about the word BElief — And this one’s a gem.
The word belief actually comes from the Old English geleafa, connected to the Germanic roots be and lief.
* Be: meaning “to be” or “to exist.”
* Lief: meaning “endeared,” “beloved,” or “willing.” It’s related to the German word Liebe (love) and means something you hold dear, something precious to you.
So literally, belief means to be in a state of holding something dear—a personal, emotional investment in what you hold true.
What does that mean? It means I'm holding onto that trans state-- that translates to the point that I can be great in the here and now and there, and then your future is already secured in God, and your past is already covered by his love.
Now what about the contrast of this verse?
First of all, it says that the lover of God is enriched beyond belief. Meaning that they're blessed far beyond what their mind can measure. While at the same time that they're holding on to God's goodness in the here and now.
It affects their there and then, but what about the evil man? The other side of this verse?
It says that they curse their luck, and, and I like that wording because it's saying that they refuse to see their own blessings all around them and they insist on discounting the good, drowning in doubt and bitterness.
In other words, blessings surround us all like a gift. But if we insist on looking at life through ghost numbers, through broken math, we end up cursing what God has already blessed.
So Hold on to This:
BE here: in the now, but know that your estate over yonder or BE-yond is already occupied by the future you that you’re currently BECOMING—So just BE!
🙏🏽 Prayer
God, because of you–I can BE who I am.
💡 Today’s Challenge:
Identify three blessings you often overlook. Speak them aloud. Write them on your bathroom mirror to remind yourself about yourself! Trust God’s math over your doubts.
