Critic Reviews:
"I loved reading this book. It is a wonderful antidote to the commercialization of travel to Mexico, and provides a refreshing and vivid picture of the people, the country and the culture." (Patricia Watson, author of My Husband's Wedding)

Loved it!
A wonderful and entertaining novel with memorable characters and many lyrical, vivid passages and descriptions. Claire is a middle-aged woman afflicted by a nervous disorder that has left her "blind in one eye". Her blindness is really an inner blindness - a blindness of the spirit that has left her adrift and unhappy. When she accepts a teaching position in Mexico, her spirit is slowly restored by the magic of the country and by the people she encounters there - most importantly Lolo, who is the embodiment of an essential, free-spirited nature and picaresque charm. This is a unique and vivid account of one woman's journey of self discovery as she learns about Mexico, and about herself - at once contemplative and hopeful, joyful and sad, with dashes of wry humour. Highly recommended.
A great read
This book is completely enthralling. Claire accepts the challenge of taking up a teaching position in Mexico, a country that is completely new to her. She soon finds herself the center of a bizarre group of expatriates and their Mexican friends. A hippy poet, an aging New Yorker with an amorous past, a mysterious fortune-teller and above all, Lolo, the man who becomes her lover, are among the fascinating characters that swirl in and out of Claire's new life in San Jose. Claire's complex and exciting romance with Lolo reflects the love she now feels for the vibrant, beautiful, but dangerous country of Mexico. This is a spell-binding novel that you won't want to put down.
