Do you like spending time alone? As an introvert, I definitely love my “me time”. But sometimes the idea of doing things alone seems… well, lonely.
Several weeks ago, I wrote a piece about my first time falling in love on the 365 Days of Love blog. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, you may want to read that story before or after this post. Because today I’m following it up with some practical ideas for developing more love in your life… in a way that might sound counter-productive at first: taking YOURSELF out on the date.
It was about 5 years ago that I was introduced to this idea of a date with myself. And honestly, I was pretty hesitant at first. Going out and doing something fun on my own sounded like a foreign concept. I had ALL the questions. What will I do if start feeling awkward? Won’t I get bored? How about if I’m the only one who shows up alone? I didn’t know the answer to any of these, but something deep down pushed me to try it out and see. So I began the experiment that lead me on a journey I never expected.
I give way more details about this journey in my post on 365 Days of Love, but one thing I’ll mention again here is that if it hadn’t been for getting comfortable spending time alone, I probably wouldn’t have been quite so ready to settle down when I met my husband.
Soon after getting married though, the story took another interesting twist. I got so used to spending most of my free time with my husband that I didn’t know what to do with myself when he happened to have other plans. During those early stages of our relationship, we’d both happily devoted our free time to each other. But things, naturally, changed a little after we started living together. We both had to learn how to balance our time between each other and everything else we needed/wanted to do. And in that process, I realized it was time for me to start practicing the art of spending time alone again.
When my husband has other plans these days, I try to make the most of it either by spending that time with other friends or by doing something special for myself. And both of these options are refreshing in their own way. Today, I’m sharing some ideas for how to do the latter.
Because the one person who will always be with you… is YOU!
So here are 10 practical ways to get in some quality time with yourself:
