Publisher's Summary:
To escape from bad memories and nightmares in London, antiquarian book dealer Dido Hoare takes time off to visit a childhood friend, Lizzy Waring. Lizzy lives in the picturesque village of Somerset with her husband and his family. The Warings own Monksdanes, an idyllic Georgian mansion; it appears the perfect place for an over-active London native to rest and recuperate. At first Dido is enchanted by the surroundings. But it's not long before she realizes, to her dismay, that the postcard beauty is just a faade - there's a much darker reality below the surface. And her best friend is unwillingly at the center of it all; something has gone terribly wrong with Lizzy's life. But what? Lizzie won't say, and her in-laws are a secretive lot. The Waring family code is quite obviously "blood is thicker than water". The rest of the world are outsiders. Nothing is what it seems.
Dido is determined to help her old friend. Fighting through a maze of lies and misdemeanors, and ultimately what she suspects is murder, she persists in probing the deep secrets the Warings are guarding. Making some allies and some enemies along the way, Dido uncovers the sinister underbelly to life in the picturesque village. Although aware that she is putting herself in jeopardy, she doggedly brings to light the horrifying truth that is at the center of it all.
Members Reviews:
not a very restful vacation
Poor Dido; she can't get away from murder, but I think the trip did her good anyway. I especially liked how her father Barnabas teamed up with Mrs Molyneux, the former teacher & clergyman's widow. He doesn't seem to like the country, but maybe she likes London.
The only thing I would have liked included is how Dido's friend Lizzie & her husband reacted to the news of the revelations at the end, but I guess you can't have everything.
Dido is great!
Love these books!
Good Mystery
This book, along with all the Dido Hoare mysteries, was good. Marianne MacDonald is a very good writer. I only have one problem with her books and the use of one certain word. They don't seem to be called for and I really wish she had left them out.
A Rabbit to Die For
Dido Hoare needs a vacation. Previous events have left her exhausted and stress-out. Lizzy Waring, an old-friend offers the perfect solution, a visit to the English countryside. Small towns hold secrets, protect their own and outsiders are not admitted to the enclave.
Teddy Waring, Lizzy's brother-in-law, returns home after serving time in prison, but when the skeleton of a woman turns up, the police are intent on reopening the ancient crime. Lizzy's father-in-law whose grip on reality is faltering fascinates Dido with his stories of his special book which can save the family from bankruptcy. But where is the personalized edition of "Peter Rabbit?"
Marianne MacDonald, picks up the pace of this English cozy with a modern twice to surprise and delight until a London traffic jam is preferable to the quiet of the English countryside.
Nash Black, author of "Sins of the Fathers" and "Travelers."
for fans of amateur sleuth novels
Normally Dido Hoare is a serene even-tempered individual but the events of the previous winter are still affecting her and now she needs a vacation.
