Blood-thinning foods, drinks and supplements

Listen Later

What are blood-thinning foods, drinks, and supplements — and can they replace medication?

Certain foods and supplements may influence clotting pathways, but they do not replace prescribed anticoagulant therapy. In this episode, we explain how blood clotting works and how bleeding and clot risk are assessed in Europe.

In this episode, we cover:

• What “blood thinning” means (reducing clot formation or platelet activity)

• Foods often discussed: garlic, ginger, turmeric, oily fish

• Alcohol and its effect on clotting

• Supplements such as omega-3, vitamin E, and ginkgo

• How these differ from anticoagulants (e.g., DOACs, warfarin)

• Risks of combining supplements with prescribed blood thinners

• Signs of excessive bleeding

• When clot symptoms require urgent medical attention

Doctors assess stroke risk (e.g., in atrial fibrillation), history of deep vein thrombosis, bleeding risk, liver function, kidney function, and current medications before prescribing anticoagulants. Dietary changes cannot substitute for indicated medical therapy. Supplement use should be disclosed, as interactions may increase bleeding risk.

This episode reflects how clotting and cardiovascular risk are reviewed within structured medical assessment in European telemedicine at Mobi Doctor.
